Lifestyle Medicine

“The high occurrence rate of severe specialized diseases and the mortality rate caused by frequent metabolic diseases in China have not improved significantly. The prevention of metabolic diseases should not focus on diagnosis and treatment but make great efforts in lifestyle changing, non-medicine intervention innovation, and all aspects of medical services.”

——By Mr. Bai Shuzhong, Lifetime Honorary Chairman of the China Health Promotion Foundation

According to the research by WHO, people's health and life span depend on 60% on lifestyle, 17% on environmental factors, 15% on biological and genetic factors, and only 8% on health care.

Lifestyle Medicine

Lifestyle Medicine is the use of evidence-based lifestyle therapeutic intervention—including a whole-food, plant-predominant eating pattern, regular physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances, and positive social connection—as a primary modality, delivered by clinicians trained and certified in this specialty, to prevent, treat, and often reverse chronic disease. The rise in chronic disease trends and related healthcare spending in the United States and many other countries is unsustainable. Type 2 diabetes alone is a looming global pandemic with incalculable consequences.

This being said, there is good news.

The good news is that 80% or more of all healthcare spending in the U.S. is tied to treating conditions rooted in poor lifestyle choices. Chronic diseases and conditions—such as hypertension, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, multiple types of cancer—are among the most common, costly, and preventable of all health conditions.

In 2017, the United States took the lead in holding examination for lifestyle medicine specialist certification and gradually incorporated it into the health insurance system, becoming the first-line treatment for chronic diseases. Subsequently, many countries have set up lifestyle medicine associations to actively participate in the global health movement as an essential direction of medical reform.

In 2016 and 2019, the Chinese government put forward the national health concepts of "building a healthy lifestyle for all" and "everyone is the first person responsible for their own health" in the "Health China 2030 Plan Outlines". Respectively, it makes an irreplaceable contribution to national health development.

China Healthcare and Wellness Federation

“There are many patients with metabolic diseases in China, so the prevention and treatment can not rely on medicine and surgery only. Therefore, we should promote the development of the China Healthcare and Wellness Federation for the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases, propel the intervention of scientific nutrition and sports, and initiate medical staff and social organizations to contribute to the change of people's lifestyle.”

——By Mr. Wang Wenzhong, chairman of the China Health Promotion Foundation
